Research Summary
The major work of our group is developing de novo assembler, especially for short reads at present. In the past few years, BGI has done de novo assembly of several large genomes, such as rice, silkworm et al. As the new sequencing technologies developing, the needs for new assemblers that can make the best out of it emerge. The most challenging parts about our work are dealing with sequencing errors and handling the extremely large amount of data using as much CPU time and memory as we can afford. Recent tests on bacterium and fungi data using short length shotgun reads, have revealed great performance of the new assembler developed here. And it is being subsequently applied to several much larger genomes now.
Ongoing Projects
1. The assembly of cucumber genome with both short reads and Sanger reads
2. The assembly of panda genome using pair-end short reads
3. The assembly of drosophila genome using pair-end short reads
